Week of 6/1

Hi Armadillo Families,

We are starting  a new theme-Transportation. We will be thinking about modes of transportation that move through the air.. Planes, rockets, hot air balloons…for this week.

We hope you enjoy these activities.

Stay well,

Shayna, Linda, Carol and Peggy

Drawing and/or Writing:  I would like to travel to… Have your child draw a picture of where they would like to go in a hot air balloon.   Help them with simple words.

Fine Motor:                                                                                                          Make an airplane using the shape of an uppercase ‘T’. If you have popsicle sticks available, glue them together in the shape of a ‘T’. If you don’t have popsicle sticks, you can cut out two shapes from cardboard (i.e. cereal box) and then glue those together. When it is dry, have fun designing your plane and giving it an airline name.

Art:                                                                                                             Parachute:  You will need a coffee filter or circle of tissue paper, three pieces of string or yarn, a paper cup, drawing tools, and something to make holes in the cup.  Color the cup and/or the filter or tissue.  Punch three holes in the filter, equidistant apart.  Punch three holes in the cup.  Tie a knot at the end of one piece of string.  Thread through the cup hole.  Leave enough string to create a parachute effect before threading through hole in the filter.  Knot securely.  Repeat the process in other holes.

Sensory:                                                                                                           Cloud Dough - Ingredients

2 Heaping cups cornstarch

1 Cup Scented Conditioner (Suave is less costly than other name brands and has some great scents)

Measure conditioner and pour into your bowl of cornstarch.

Use a long spatula to mix the two ingredients until it gets hard to mix.

Use your hands to finish kneading the dough together. One way to do this is to put it all in a gallon zipper seal bag and continue kneading it.

Now it's ready for play

  1. Measure and add cornstarch to a large mixing bowl.

Gross Motor:                                                                                                    Yoga challenge: First balance on one foot in tree pose. Then, without putting your foot down, extend it behind you in airplane pose with your arms stretched out for balance. Still keeping your foot off the group, stand upright and continue to balance on the same foot. Do this again with the other side, moving from tree pose to airplane to just balancing on the other foot.

Literacy Extension: Watch the video about how to fold a paper airplane.

Fine Motor Extension: Watch the video about how to fold a paper airplane.

Art Extension:  Fly little people or animals in the bucket.  Another idea is to eliminate the cup and tie the strings to a pretend person or toy animal.

Extension: Roll out snake-like shapes that you can then form into letters or use baking tools like cookie cutters, rolling pins and spatulas.

Gross Motor Extension: Try this challenge with a partner. Ask a family to do these poses with you, holding hands.
