TCW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RETREAT 2018

Ever wonder what we do during the Staff Development Retreat that is funded by you?  Each year we begin by setting up a Retreat Committee, consisting of one teacher from each classroom plus Katy, the Director. This year our topic was STEM, which is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics.

AFTERNOON TEAM BUILDING

After the morning workshop we transition into the afternoon working on team bonding and individual growth.  The Retreat Committee is responsible for coming up with the ideas for the afternoon and gathering all the items needed. This year we carried over the STEM theme into the afternoon project.

Below we have the supplies for each staff member to create/build their own terrarium using mason jars, pebbles, soil, moss and tiny little plants. This is our individual growth project. We each had to learn not only how a terrarium works, but how to go about building a terrarium that would survive!

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

It was a nice relaxing, creative and thoughtful experience for all.

GROUP PROJECT

In addition to the terrariums, our team building project was for each classroom to create a stepping stone to put in our TCW Garden at the front door.  We gathered assorted mosaic pieces and animals representing the classrooms to put into cement.

Each classroom teacher team collaborated to devise an idea for a stepping stone that would represent their class. Then we had to do a "trial run" placing our items on a piece of paper that was the size of the stepping stone we were using.  Below we've gathered the mosaic pieces together and had to share them among each team.

Masterful cement mixer, Niki, so serious about her job!

Once the draft was completed, our cement mixer, Niki, handed over a box filled with cement for us to transfer our design onto the stepping stone. We had to work fast pressing the pieces into the cement because the cement was setting up so quickly!

Beautiful Bunnies!

You'll be able to view our lovely designs in the TCW Garden this Spring!
We think they will be a wonderful addition to our garden and help with the curb appeal!  Let us know what you think!
